Jörmungandr
In Old Norse, Jǫrmungandr, pronounced [ˈjɔrmunˌɡandr̥], meaning "huge monster".
The World-Serpent.
The Midgard Serpent.
Son of Loki.
Known by many names, Jörmungandr is so large it wraps it's body around the world of Midgard under the cool and deep waves of the oceans. There have been 3 highly spoke of tales regarding the Midgard Serpent and our mighty hero Thor.
1. Lifting The Cat
In this tale, Thor comes across the giant king Útgarða-Loki and is challenged in a manner of ways. The giant king proposed 3 challenges for Thor. One of which is for him to prove his strength. Útgarða-Loki goads Thor into a gigantic cat, which happened to be Jörmungandr under disguise. He grabs it at its waist, but only manages to lift it up enough for a single paw to come up from the floor.
Útgarða-Loki expresses that the result was as expected and later on reveals the illusion. Admitting that Thor's strength was truly impressive, for without illusion he lifted the serpent to almost reach the sky! Many watched on, fearful when they saw the paw leaving the ground, for if Thor managed to lift the serpent from the ground, the very boundaries of the universe would have been affected.
2. Thor's Fishing Trip
This time Thor goes fishing with a giant by the name of Hymir. Thor needed bait and Hymir refused to provide it, so he decides to use Hymir's largest ox's head (what a pal). They begin rowing out to where Hymir had often sat and caught fish and even whales, but Thor demands to go out even further, despite Hymir's protest. With a strong line, a massive hook baited with the ox head Thor eventually catches Jörmungandr, and the two are face to face. The serpent's mouth dripping with poison and blood, truly a sight of awe in the middle of the ocean, Humor goes pale with fear. Thor reaches for his hammer, Mjölnir, Hymir cuts the line out of fear - leaving the World-Serpent to sink back beneath the waves.
In other versions, Thor successfully captures and manages to kill Jörmungandr, by striking it on the head with Mjölnir
3. Ragnarok
There are many signs of the coming Ragnarok, one of which being the unrest of the oceans themselves as Jörmungandr releases it's tail from its mouth and makes its way to land.
Fenrir, another offspring of Loki, setting half the world ablaze with fire While Jörmungandr fills the skies and seas with its deadly poison. Together, Jörmungandr and Fenrir will join the sons of Muspell into the plain of Vigrid. It is in this place that Jörmungandr is fated to meet Thor once again to do battle on their own, far from the help of the other Gods. Thor will manage to defeat Jörmungandr, but after nine paces he will fall dead from its poison.
Jörmungandr - "The Unstoppable Serpent: Jörmungandr and the Battle of Ragnarok" Jörmungandr, also known as the World Serpent, is one of the most fearsome creatures in Norse mythology. According to legend, this massive sea serpent encircles the world and is one of the children of Loki. While Jörmungandr is often seen as a malevolent force, it is also an important part of Norse mythology's end of the world, Ragnarok. During Ragnarok, Jörmungandr will rise up from the sea and battle Thor in a fierce battle that will shake the earth. Ultimately, Jörmungandr and Thor will kill each other in this epic clash.
Jörmungandr's symbolism is complex and multi-faceted. On one hand, it is seen as a destructive force that threatens the balance of the world. On the other hand, it is also an important part of the cycle of creation and destruction that characterizes Norse mythology. As such, Jörmungandr represents both the destructive power of chaos and the transformative power of change.
